Techniques & Tips...

Hitting

Grip

The grip on the bat should be comfortable in the hand, ideally the middle knuckles on each hand would line up. This helps in executing the proper swing. The grip should be fairly loose up until you ‘load’ particularly with your top hand. Don’t choke the bat with such a tight grip that it tenses up all the muscles in your arms and shoulders.

Load & Stride

Once the pitcher begins his movement forward with the pitch, the batter should then ‘load’. What this involves is a slight movement inward and backwards (about 2 inches) of the batters hands, shoulders, hips and knees. The batter’s weight shifts from a 50/50 to a 40/60 front to back ratio. During this load it is important to not move the head and to keep your eyes on the ball.

Softball Leagues

T-Ball (Age 5)

T-Ball is a program designed for the five year old. This program is pure fundamentals. We encourage only five year olds to register for this program so that the T-Ball skill sets are best utilized. These players learn proper throwing mechanics, base running, and some basic rules of the game. T-Ball is a coach pitch, usually from one knee that encourages contact in hitting from the tee. There is no score kept, no balls or strikes, and no outs. All players bat. Nine players play the field.

Instructional Softball (Ages 6-8)

Instructional Softball is designed for six, seven and eight year old players. This league uses a combination of previous skill and teaching of fundamentals. These players are reminded to use proper throwing mechanics, proper base running, and a continued reinforcement of the basic rules of the game. This league is a coach pitch league. Older league participants are encouraged to try pitching later in the season. There is no score kept, no balls and no strikes.

Ponytail (Ages 9-10)

Ponytail Softball is the first league within the competitive structure of A.A.Y.O. Rules are enforced by an official A.A.Y.O. Umpire. There is a win/loss record kept by the League Coordinator. Playoff brackets are figured at the end of the season. Pitching is player pitch only.

Minors (Ages 11-12)

Minors Softball is the second league within the competitive structure of A.A.Y.O. Rules are enforced by an official A.A.Y.O. Umpire. There is a win/loss record kept by the League Coordinator. Playoff brackets are figured at the end of the season. Pitching is player pitch only.

Majors (Ages 13-16)

Majors Softball is the final league within the competitive structure of A.A.Y.O. Rules are enforced by an official A.A.Y.O. Umpire. There is a win/loss record kept by the League Coordinator. Playoff brackets are figured at the end of the season. Pitching is player pitch only. As a result of the age group this league targets, games do not begin until after June 1 to comply with high school eligibility rules.

Baseball, to me, is still the national pastime because it is a summer game. I
feel that almost all Americans are summer people, that summer is what they
think of when they think of their childhood. I think it stirs up an incredible
emotion within people.
